Explore new possibilities through the introduction of Flight into your practice.
This six-part professional learning series introduces Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework. Through examples and photo-rich presentations, you will explore some of the possibilities for integrating Flight into your practice with children and families.
The learning series is relevant for early childhood educators working in licensed programs in Alberta seeking an introduction to the Flight Framework’s core concepts and guiding principles.
Below you will find details on the six sessions offered through ARCQE’s Possibilities for Practice Learning Series. Please note, to complete the series you must attend all six sessions. Sessions are not individually available.
Session 1: What is Curriculum?
This session will introduce educators to Flight and explore its guiding principles—what they are and what they mean for our practice with children and families. Participants will learn what is considered curriculum in early learning and child care and become familiar with some of the language in the framework.
Session 2: Image of the Child
In this session, participants will examine their image of the child and the impact that this image might have on how they respond to children. They will begin reflecting on their practice and be challenged to look at it through the lens of children as mighty learners and citizens.
Session 3: Responsive Environments
Through this picture-rich session, the elements of responsive environments—time, space, materials, and participation—will be explored. Educators will be invited to return to their programs and complete a playroom inventory learning activity to celebrate what they are already doing and make intentional decisions about what else they might do to create a truly responsive environment.
Session 4: Practice of Relationships
This session will introduce how the educator acts as a co-learner, co-researcher, and co-imaginer of possibilities. Educators will explore what each of these roles means for their practice with children, families, and colleagues. Examples of what these roles look like and sound like will be shared, and educators will be invited to examine the roles they are assuming in their current practice in a follow-up learning activity.
Session 5: Transitions and Continuities
In this session, educators will begin exploring this Flight core concept; specifically, they will explore how they might provide support as children and families begin their time in care, as they arrive each day, during daily program routines and transitions, and when families are experiencing challenges in their lives.
Session 6: Reflective Practice and Professional Learning
In this concluding session, educators will use reflection to think deeply about and become more intentional in their practice with children and families. Possibilities for continuing educators’ exploration of Flight in their programs will be explored as well as additional pedagogical supports and learning series available to continue the journey living the framework in daily practice.
Offered to “individual” educators currently working in a childcare, family day home, or out of school program wanting to learn more about the curriculum framework opportunities. This series will have sessions offered during a series of 6 weeks, allowing access to educators across the province.
Any childcare program or agency may request the PfP series for their whole educational team. Group training sessions will be conducted over six weeks. *Programs require a minimum of 25 educators to book the PfP learning series for their program or agency. Smaller programs may consider partnering with another program to host a session for one or more sites.
