Healthy Environments in Early Childhood Education Workshop

Safety for Children Through Prevention and Risk Reduction, in partnership with Health Canada’s Alberta Environmental Health Program.

The Early Learning and Child Care Act and Regulation require childcare programs to provide a healthy and safe environment for children at all times. Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Framework also emphasizes the importance of healthy environments for children’s well-being, ensuring their safety, health, and sense of belonging.

In partnership with Health Canada’s Alberta Environmental Health Program, this workshop is designed to educate Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) about environmental chemicals and pollutants and their effects on health, especially for children. The workshop will cover topics like air quality, radon, and chemical management, raising ECEs’ awareness of environmental health risks and offering strategies to reduce these risks.

ECEs will learn actions to protect their own health and the health of the children in their care. This knowledge will be shared with the children and their families to ensure healthy environments.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
– Recognize health exposure issues related to chemical substances, radon and air quality in their environment including potential hazards to themselves and children in their care.
– Identify and take actions to prevent and reduce health risks, to themselves and children in their care, from exposure to chemicals and pollutants in the environment.
– Utilize Health Canada’s tools, products, and resources to increase their awareness of health impacts related to environmental health factors, including chemical management, radon, and air quality.
