Building Relationships with Families

Empowering Strong and Collaborative Family Connections that Build Strong and Collaborative Relationships.

  • Child Development

This session emphasizes the importance families have in children’s development, recognizing that “Families know their children in ways that no one else can” (Makovichuk et al., 2014). When children enter early learning environments, educators should nurture strong and collaborative relationships with families, fostering a holistic approach that supports children’s needs through the sharing of information and ideas. As the authors state, “Families, children, and educators create places of vitality together” (Makovichuk et al., 2014).

Session participants will explore:

  • The Image of the Family and how we see families as integral partners in a child’s learning journey.
  • Effective ways to observe, document and communicate with families.
  • Strategies to reflect on and strengthen relationships with families.
  • Practice cultural sensitivity to embrace diversity within your program
  • The connections between these practices and Flight: Alberta’s Early Learning and Care Curriculum Framework.

Participants will also explore guiding principles that support cultural diversity in early learning programs. We’ll reflect on our values and introduce the Consciousness Continuum model, which helps educators move toward becoming “unconsciously competent” in their cultural understanding and practices. You’ll have the chance to examine practical ways to weave cultural sensitivity into your daily interactions and create environments where every child and family feels valued, seen, and included.
